The EASE Lab is built on three pillars that guide how we do science and how, most importantly, we treat each other.
Psychological Safety
The best science happens when people feel free to think out loud, ask the question they're afraid is naive, and admit when something isn't working. Every single member, regardless of their experience level, belongs here, and their perspective shapes what we do. We treat mistakes as part of learning, disagreement as a sign of engagement, and curiosity as the thing worth protecting most. We work hard to make our lab a place where everyone feels truly supported and knows that constructive feedback is how we grow and achieve our full potential.
Investing in Each Other
The lab exists because of the hard work and dedication of every team member, and we want this to be a place where people thrive. Mentorship and teamwork lie at the heart of that. Every trainee arrives with their own questions, strengths, and hopes for what comes next, and we celebrate both individual goals and our collective research mission. We also foster collaborative teamwork, which we believe makes science more fun and impactful. This extends to EASE as a whole, which invests deeply in collaborative work with other labs and institutions (see Collaborations page!).
Rigorous Science with Social Purpose
We care deeply about the questions we ask. Understanding how the social determinants of health leave their mark on biology isn't an abstract puzzle. The answers have the potential to shape the lives of children for generations to come. We must hold ourselves accountable to keep asking how our work can reach the world beyond the lab. And if we aim to translate our discoveries into interventions that one day help society, we must hold our methods and approaches to the highest standard.
